Games where the sound is the whole point

August 28, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Some games treat audio as background. A few build the entire experience around it, and Static Orchard reminded me how powerful that is when done well.

In that game you grow plants tuned to radio frequencies, so listening is literally the mechanic. Play it on a tinny speaker and it collapses into nonsense. With headphones it becomes something close to meditation.

This got me pulling up other sound-led games I'd half-forgotten. The good ones share a discipline: they cut visual clutter so your ears do the work. It takes confidence to make a quiet screen.

Practical note, since I keep saying it: wired headphones with games like these are often worth it. Bluetooth latency can throw off timing-based audio, and you'll feel it before you understand why the game seems off.

We don't cover enough of these because they're rare. When a genuinely sound-first game shows up, it usually jumps the queue on our review list.
